5 Tactics to Improving Your Social Media Following

Everyone and their grandma is on social media these days. In an age where even dogs and cats have their own Facebook pages, it’s time to think about what you are doing to attract this vast pool of users.

  1. Twitter_logo_blue copySave time and schedule your tweets ahead of time. We prefer using either Hootsuite or TweetDeck, but the choice is yours and the options are plentiful. This will help you make sure you are posting every day and allows you to monitor the responses you are getting from your followers.
  2. Make sure your presence is everywhere, and we mean EVERYWHERE! If you’re already going to take the time to come up with posts, why not shout about it? Link your social media sites to your website and blog. People are much more likely to follow you if you are only a click away! Add your handles and names to your business cards, email signature and store sign. Create a unique hashtag and remind employees to follow, share company posts and post about the company, appropriately of course.
  3. Post meaningful and relevant content. No begging for re-tweets, followers or likes. The whole “Like if you agree” or “Please please follow us” starts to sound a little desperate. Instead, draw people in by posting interesting links or fun posts. Try offering items such as exclusive deals or information to those that follow you. Much cooler than pleading for attention and definitely more effective.
  4. Do unto others as you will have them do unto you. Aka, follow the people that follow you! Interact with users that have mentioned or shared your posts. Participate in the little things such as #FollowFridays to build relationships with people in your industry. Surprise, social media is all about being social so the more you interact, the more feedback you will get.
  5. In the case of social media, quality often trumps quantity. Attracting a user with a high Klout Score will count more than 5 followers who have yet to tweet. This also applies to the quantity of messages you post. It is better to share a well-constructed tweet with the appropriate hashtags than a meaningless link. Spamming your followers is a sure-fire way to lose them.
